Flying with baby, Is it safe?

Most people argue about the safety of their beloved child, moreover when their baby still below six months old. We all know baby below six years old is fragile. They are not immune to any bacteria. Somehow it's make baby more vulnerable to any diseases.  I have a friend ask me this question, "is it safe flying with baby? i need to travel to Africa." I want to tell him not to move to africa first, your baby can get sick, but I cannot say that, considering her condition that she need to fly to africa because her dad is dying.
